When working on small animals (mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, frogs, and birds), cup your hands gently around their bodies without applying any pressure. You may feel a rapid heartbeat, but don’t worry: your animal will relax. Just allow the animal to be surrounded in Reiki energy within your cupped hands. If you treat small animals during their sleep cycles, keep the hands just above the surface of their skin, so as to not to disturb them.
When treating injured tame birds with Reiki, place their bodies in one open hand. Make sure their wings are folded back against their body in a natural position. In addition, their sternums must be able to move freely, as this is how they breathe. I recommend sharing Reiki with your bird this way for 10 minutes twice a day while the injury or illness persists. If the case of caged wild birds or fish in a tank, it is best to place your hands around the cage or tank and just allow the energy to flow between your hands; in this case it may be good to treat for 20 to 30 minutes so the small creatures can have time to absorb the energy they need.
Your pets may not be able to speak, but I am sure you communicate fabulously with each other! Any of my suggestions regarding time or amounts of sharing Reiki are just that and not meant to create doubt when your animal is telling you that s/he has had enough.
