When your animal is making their final life transition, Reiki is a gentle way to ease and provide comfort from pain, fear and anxiety. Because Reiki is safe and does not cause harm, it is a perfect complement when used alongside other healing modalities, whether those forms of treatment are holistic or allopathic. Reiki always works for the greatest and highest good for your animal.
If you come to find an injured or dying animal in the wilds or on a roadside, use caution when approaching and treating the animal with Reiki. You most likely will not know if the animal has a disease which could cause you harm. Perhaps the animal will show fearful signs and lash out while exerting his/her final energy.
On the other hand, I understand your initial and possibly impulsive desire to share Reiki with the animal. It is very gratifying to help another soul in such a transition. It can also help you to create peace with the cycle of life.
Last summer I watched a blackbird get hit by the car in front of me. I instantly stopped my car, pulling over to the side of the road. I jumped out and ran to the bird’s side. I assessed the injury and the bird’s demeanor. S/he was acting scared, with little chirps, but did not seem angry or strong enough to be dangerous, so I hovered my hands one inch over his/her body. My boyfriend chased after me from the car and was instantly worried that this process would put me into a sad mood, ruining our day of vacation. The bird had relaxed in just a few seconds of me being there. Figuring that was enough, I agreed to get back in the car and continue our trip. Perhaps it was enough Reiki to help the blackbird through this transition in life. Perhaps, but please remember that Reiki is all-loving. It is the sharing of positive life force energy, and thus when it travels through you it brings peace and balance, even if you are sharing with a dying creature.
Blessings for both of you in peace.
