Reiki for Animals

“Life is as dear to the mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not to die, so do other creatures.”

- His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Reiki is a non-invasive energy healing system that flows to the body, mind and spirit. It is a way of channeling healing energy that flows from a practitioner’s hands by intent, and can be performed directly with the animal near, or from a distance. Because Reiki can flow from a distance, it is ideal for some animals that do not want direct contact but still want to benefit from the healing energy. As with people, positive life force energy goes to where the healing is needed most in animals.

Reiki is a wonderful addition to your animal’s life journey. It helps to maintain and promote your animal’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being.

Animal Reiki, as well as other alternative therapies, is now being applied to treat animals for disease and general wellness. Many veterinarians use Reiki to supplement conventional veterinary medicine.Reiki animal healing does not involve the administration of any drugs, and will not cause your pet any harm. Reiki is recommended for treating pain, anxiety and behavioral problems. The therapy can be calming and may help an agitated animal become a more acceptable pet.* NOTE: There are several major differences between working on animals and humans, and it is important to understand and remember them as you set about your work. First, it is of utmost importance to share Reiki with your pets as soon as you sense any changes in behavior habits; i.e., in their temperament, eating, elimination patterns or sense of comfort.the more quickly you treat animals, the more quickly they return to health and balance. It is important to be aware of subtle changes in our pets’ behavior. If you come home and your pet seems lethargic and indifferent to you or is licking itself more than usual, doesn’t have energy to eat, play, etc., they are probably not feeling well.Animals can get hurt easily when we are away as they play, jump, chase toys or dissipate their energy by running around the house. If an injury is allowed to swell, excessive fluids can gather in and around the injury, increasing pressure and decreasing the flow of energy to the area of injury. This can result in permanent damage to tissues and lengthen treatment time. Reiki increases your injured animals’ energy flow to decrease pressure, swelling, pain and agitation. If you notice inflammation on your animal, place you hands directly on or above the injured spot.It is good to remember to approach any injured or sick animal with caution and love. Move towards an animal slowly and pet the animal lightly; pay attention to any area that appears to be sensitive to touch. If your animal in not acting lively, is shy and won't eat, and won't allow you to treat with your hands, then try beaming energy to it from a short distance. I sit in a chair and when a sick or injured animal does come close, and hold my closest hand over or toward the animal. When they have enough, they will move away, and often later return to receive additional energy.

When treating domestic animals (farm and house) with Reiki, it is good to start the treatment by laying hands at the base of the ears near the neck if they will allow you to do so. This seems to calm down animals. As in humans, when the body is relaxed and stress-free, energy flows more easily and in greater supply. Once your pet is relaxed s/he can be treated systematically (hand positions similar to those for humans) or simply lay hands on the areas that you sense are in pain or unbalanced. Be guided by your inner sense and feelings as to where to lay hands and how long to leave them in the positions chosen. When sharing Reiki with your pet, try to ascertain the possible cause for the animal's discomfort. Do not force the animal to sit still while you do your work; rather, raise your hands just off the surface of the body. Do spend extra time on sensitive areas, but remember to treat the animal’s entire body—other parts reacting to the initial injury can be energized and brought into balance also. Continue to treat your animal regularly until it is back to its normal routines without exhibiting any symptoms. Animals are usually more receptive to positive life force energy, but they do seem to take longer to respond to energy healing treatments than do humans. Treat the animals daily for as long as it takes them to heal. Animals do love Reiki and it will work for them!
